UPDATE: The investigation into Ebony Owens’ disappearance has been upgraded to a murder investigation, and her husband is facing multiple charges, Mississippi officials say.

Hinds County deputies said Michael Owens, 36, is in custody and facing multiple charges after it was determined that his wife died from at least one gunshot wound. Ebony Owens’ body has not been located but search and recovery efforts are underway at the Big Black River between Hinds and Warren counties.

The search for Ebony Owens began on Wednesday, March 15, when the mom of four did not show up for work and her family had not heard from her, Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones said during a March 16 news conference. Deputies were called to conduct a welfare check at her home on Wednesday afternoon.

Evidence indicated that Ebony Owens, who is from Edwards, was last known to be in Clinton the evening of March 14, according to Jones.

Earlier on Wednesday, before Ebony Owens was reported missing, officials located a burning car, but they were unable to identify the make and model, according to Jones. Once deputies learned of Ebony Owens’ disappearance, they located her license plate near the vehicle and identified it as her car.

Jones said the fire is believed to be intentional.

Deputies and investigators responded to an apartment complex on Wednesday night where they towed a vehicle and recovered evidence believed to be connected to Ebony Owens’ disappearance from inside and apartment, Jones said.

Jones said that all of Ebony Owens’ children were safe and in the care of family members.

Owens was last known to be near Interstate 20 in the Clinton area the evening of Tuesday, March 14, Jones said. Her car was found about 20 miles west of that area near Old Highway 80 and Jones Road in Edwards — where Owens lives.

My heart can’t take this,” another post said.
